Derma Pen Micro Needling & Derma Roller

The premise behind Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy), is to stimulate the production of new collagen, using the skin’s ability to heal itself. The tiny needles used in Dermapen Micro-Needling make microscopic channels in the dermis, triggering the body’s healing response. This stimulates production of new collagen and elastin, so your skin plumps up, looking refreshed and radiant.

Derma Roller- In recent years the medical world have succeeded in addressing facial scarring and particularly facial scarring as a result of acne. The results are amazing using the Derma Roller and 2-3 sessions will see a remarkable change in the tissue scarring on your face.

The most common cause of wrinkles is the Ageing of the skin which causes drooping of the skin causing wrinkles and lines that can become dry and coarse with uneven skin colouring and broken blood vessels (telangiectasia). Another big factor affecting your skin is smoking where smokers can appear gaunt and develop an orange or grey complexion. Since the 1970’s studies have shown that smoking results in more premature facial wrinkling than sun exposure. Lines around the eyes called “crow’s feet” can develop at an earlier age. Multiple vertical lines around the mouth also occur and are called “smoker’s lines”. These effects continue into old age. By the age of 70 years, smoking 30 cigarettes a day could lead to the equivalent of an extra 14 years of skin ageing.

Smoking and Sun damage changes the elastic fibres of the skin and causes the narrowing of blood vessels (vasoconstriction), which reduces blood supply to the skin and can cause changes in skin elastic fibres and loss of collagen. The wrinkles around the mouth and ‘crows feet’ around the eyes in the past were difficult to treat because traditional methods could not get to the affected area easily but with the advent of Dermapen Microneedling the fine line wrinkles around the mouth and eyes are now accessible and treatable with excellent results.

Dermapen Microneedling is now available in certain clinics and involves deep regeneration and smoothing of the skin. Treatments are not expensive but may vary from clinic to clinic and not all clinics offer ‘Dermapen’ Microneedling treatments. It is an alternative to the more traditional Microneedling roller procedure which used needling techniques to penetrate the skins surface but across a broader surface area and could not be applied into smaller surface areas such as around the eyes. With the advent of research and the latest technologies the new Dermapen Microneedling treatment produces superb results in areas that previously could not be treated with the more traditional Microneedling roller method.

How it works

The premise behind Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy), is to stimulate the production of new collagen, using the skin’s ability to heal itself. The tiny needles used in Dermapen Micro-Needling make microscopic channels in the dermis, triggering the body’s healing response. This stimulates production of new collagen and elastin, so your skin plumps up, looking refreshed and radiant. The success of the treatment is the capability to reach areas of the face that could not be treated in the past and as everyone’s face is different, and the needle depth on Dermapen can be adjusted during treatment. It’s safer and more effective than a dermal roller, and there is no danger of breaking or bending the little needles on the skin. The Dermapen is designed with a spring-loaded tip that uses an automated motion, so it’s much easier to control than other Micro-Needling devices. The Dermapen is the latest development in medical skin needling. It results in fractionated skin needling for collagen stimulation.

Derma Pen Treatment

The Dermapen device is more comfortable than traditional micro-needling because the needles are smaller. The advantage of dermapen over conventional skin needling rollers is that it can treat difficult areas such as around the eyes and upper lip which are often difficult to treat effectively with conventional rollers. Dermapen Microneedling can be used for the following treatments –

Dermapen treats wrinkles, fine lines and damaged skin,
Dermapen is ideal for scars, acne scars and burn scars.
Dermapen is just as effective as ablative treatments such as Fraxel and Laser Resurfacing.
Dermapen can be used in conjunction with other treatments such as IPL and Restylane skinboosters for an effective anti-ageing regimen.
The treatment is virtually painless, with little or no down time depending on the level of treatment and the area being treated. It can be made with varied intensity and is adjusted individually to the needs of the customer. The treatment is suitable for all ages but is extremely effective on mature facial skin. The best effects are visible after a series of 3 – 4 treatments.

After treatment, patients commonly describe the areas treated as firmer, with the removal of fine lines and the skin looks younger and firmer. The Dermapen Microneedling is revolutionary in the areas that can now be effectively treated and it is becoming a very popular treatment for skin rejuvenation with women of all ages.

Types Of scarring

  • Atrophic macules- These are small, bluish-whitish skin colorations, and are usually less visible than other types of scarring

  • Depressed fibrotic scars. – These are large, depressed valleys on the surface of the skin. They are usually jagged

  • Follicular macular atrophy– This consists in small, slightly raised lesions, similar in appearance to whiteheads

  • Ice-pick scars. – These less severe versions of depressed fibrotic scars, and with time, they can in fact develop into them

  • Soft scars– These are gentle, scar-like depressions in the skin. They are usually small, and either circular or linear.

In recent years the medical world have succeeded in addressing facial scarring and particularly facial scarring as a result of acne. Acne scars are a more permanent reminder of the acne problems you experienced earlier in your life. The effects are both physical and emotional and are difficult to avoid if you are prone to scarring. In simple terms, an acne scar is the visible legacy of your skin’s tissue damage / trauma. Whenever our skin is damaged in any way, blood travels to the area carrying a mixture of our own body’s natural defences.

The body’s immediate response is to heal and prevent further problems by way of infection from external sources. Unfortunately, although our skin does invariably manage to heal itself, it often does so with scant regard to how it looked in it’s former state. There are two general types of scars left behind by acne. Either caused by tissue loss or over compensation of tissue growth. Generally, sufferers of acne scars in which tissue growth is excessive, tend to be from African or Asian backgrounds. This is called Keloid scaring. They form when the skin cells produce excess collagen which form the scars.

It is collagen which makes up the majority of our skin structure. Effectively, Keloid scarring is the body healing itself too much. On the opposite scale when the scars are formed because of tissue loss, it is the lack of collagen in the skin which results in the scar being visible. This type of scarring is much more common in European type skin complexions and is known as Atrophic scarring. There are several types of Atrophic scarring:

an Effective Acne Scar Removal Method

In Medilase we treat scarring using Micro Needling or Derma Rolling(Trade Name) which has only been made available in recent years and was developed in Germany. What the Micro needling does, is create a painless microscopic trauma to the same area of skin, promoting additional collagen growth – which gradually stimulates the skin’s return to a normal composition.

The area may still be void of hair follicles and sweat glands, but the skin will be thicker, have less pronounced discolouration and will look considerably better. What it is effectively doing is renewing or extending the healing process which happens naturally within the skin. The Derma Roller’s extension of this healing process means that the scar tissue repairs itself to a state which has a look and feel which matches the skin around it.

Unlike many other scar removal treatments, no cosmetically noticeable damage is caused to the epidermis and the treatment can be continually carried out without concern for additional cost of repeated and expensive clinical visits. This technique is also used for the reduction of other types of scars including stretch marks. Research from 2006 (which included tissue biopsies) has shown that a single micro needling session can encourage up to a 1000% increase in collagen levels in the skin, making it appear younger, healthier, more elastic and even textured.
